When summer arrives, all anyone can think about is enjoying the outdoors that are so nice in comparison to the harsh winter. However, many people struggle with getting their house’s exterior to reflect their summer mood. The yard often looks abandoned and unappealing , the outdoor furniture looks dirty and old, and it can feel as though the last traces of winter refuse to relinquish their hold on the house. But there are certainly ways to manage your home so that it is ready for summer use, and you only need to put effort in the right places to accomplish it.
The following tips will show you how easy it can be to have a satisfying look for your house during the summer:
1. Let the wiping begin! - It may sound tedious, but it’s a crucial first step!
As soon as you get a chance, once summer is taking hold, clean the outdoor of your house. This includes: wiping down patio furniture, sweeping the deck, and generally trying to rid the outdoor of your house of dust. You can use a wet sponge on really stubborn patches of dirt if necessary. This step is really a good start to putting some life back into your house’s exterior!
2. Make your windows shine - Let the sunlight
into your home!
Winter has a way of leaving grime all over the windows in houses. A good way to make your house look shiny and new again is making sure your windows are clean! For lower windows, you can use a multipurpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth or a sponge, both on the inside and the outside. You might also want to rinse your window screens, and let them air dry before putting them back in. For really grimy windows, a garden hose can be a great asset. We know that second-level windows can be especially tricky, but do not fret! There are plenty of Skilled Doers (SDs) from JobJar that you could call who will have the right equipment. The entire window-cleaning process may sound exhausting, but by dedicating some time to it, you’ll be ready to enjoy the summer view with no worries.
3. Prepare your yard so it can be healthy and beautiful! (Front & Back)
Your yard will probably not be at its best right after the winter, so it’s important to get it ready to receive the rain that will make it beautifully green again. A good way to start is to take away dead grass, leaves, twigs, and branches, and then mow the lawn. If you have dog droppings in your yard, get rid of those as well, and get back into the habit of picking it up weekly (we know it’s tougher during the winter months). Once you’ve done these things, your lawn will be ready to become your pride and joy again.
4. Plants - Create your own mini oasis!
Buying and planting flowers, fruits, or vegetables and taking care of them makes your house look welcoming and lively. It also gives it a nice smell! If you are the sort of person who likes dedicating lots of time to horticulture, then you can certainly go all out and plant things in the front yard, backyard, and in planters on patios and decks, making your house’s exterior look amazing. However, if you don’t exactly have a green thumb, a few strategically placed groups of flowers will do the trick. Buying a few planters with flowers in them and getting into the habit of watering them, will add a lot of beauty to your home.. Don’t be afraid to dedicate a corner of your yard to your favourite flowers!
5. Clean out your gutters - You don’t want to have to deal with water damage to your roof!
Debris build up in your gutters can cause many damages, but by taking the time to clear it out, you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble. To clean out your gutters you will need: a hand shovel, a ladder (if you aren’t used to them or don’t have a safe one, JobJar will be able to help you find a Skilled Doer who can assist you), buckets, a garden hose, a gutter cleaning attachment and gutter sealant. You can start with clearing away twigs, leaves and dirt, and then start using the hose to rinse out the rest of the grime. If there are any leaks, use gutter sealant on joints. Again, this may sound like too much work, but you’ll be glad when you don’t have to worry about any of the problems caused by unclean gutters.
6. Repaint the frames of your doors and windows - and anything else that has lost its colour!
Fresh paint will make your house look younger and welcoming, and it’s a pretty fun job! Walk around the outside of your house and see which spots need a fresh coat of paint. Decide if you want to keep those spots the same colour, or change them up! Make sure to wear old clothing that you wouldn’t mind getting paint spots on! Get your painting tools, your chosen colour, and get started! Let your frames and anything else you painted dry, and then enjoy the effect on your house’s appearance!
7. Clean your garage floor!
Dirt and dust accumulate really well over the cold months, because they are stuck to the snow brought in on cars. Getting rid of the dirt will help you rearrange things in your garage, including summer equipment that’s been stored away for a while. To get started, use a push broom to sweep dirt and dust into a designated corner. Once you get rid of it, you can start power washing the floor. It’s a good idea to start at the back, and work your way to the mouth of the garage, in order to ensure thoroughness.
8. Power wash your driveway ( Preferably after you clean the garage)!
This task is blissfully simple, and quite relaxing! You’ll just need to power wash your driveway using your hose, and again: starting at the back is one of the best methods. You might want to ensure that the nearest street drain is unblocked before getting started. This task will get rid of any lingering dirt, and will leave a blank slate for chalk drawings!
9. Organize outdoor toys and furniture!
You might want a new layout for your outdoor furniture and/or toys, which could include tables, chairs, balls, skipping ropes, and hula hoops. You can have a colourful bucket to keep balls, and lay hula hoops against it. It’s helpful if you can get your kids into the habit of putting away their toys after they are done, to prevent any lawn mower incidents. If you feel up to it, you could try re-organizing your garage. You can make it easier for yourself by concentrating on one section at a time.
10. Last, but not least: Get creative!
It’s important to remember that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Don’t sit around daydreaming about having an awesome backyard or front yard, get to work instead! You can get things like a hammock to relax in, a kiddie pool, and water guns! All of the tips above leave satisfying results, such as: you finally feeling like you can enjoy your summer, and making your house look awesome! Make a list of things you want to get done for yourself , and you’ll find that it’s perfectly possible to have the summer house you’ve always wanted.
